Abstract
The mode of migration initiation, spreading and termination of cortical interneurons.
Cortical interneurons play vital roles in the development and function of cortical networks. Their inhibitory influences regulate both the excitability of cortical projection neurons on the level of individual cells, and the synchronous activity of projection neuron ensembles that appear to be a neural basis for major aspects of cognitive processing. Most cortical interneurons are generated in the medial ganglionic eminence and migrate tangentially across long distances to settle in the dorsal pallium, the future neocortex, where they form local circuits. Using transgenic animals, in utero electroporation and live imaging, I show how interneurons initiate migration, spread into the cortex, terminate migration and settle in the cortex.
