Successful visit to Singapore

22 January 2020

The leaders of our School and of the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology visited the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (Nanyang Technological University) and the School of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering (Nanyang Technological University, NTU) from 6 January  to 11 January for the exchange of educational experience and the launch of the health engineer (Biomedical Engineering) program.

Members of the delegation were:

  • Professor Gabriella Medvegy, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology,
  • dr. Ádám Schiffer, Head of the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology Institute of Information and Electrical Technology,
  • dr. László Czopf, Vice-Dean for Education of the University of Pécs Medical School,
  • dr. Árpád Csathó, Director of the Department of Behavioural Sciences at the Medical School,
  • and dr. Péter Maróti, Innovation and Development Manager of the University of Pécs 3D Centre.

Dr. Michael Alan Ferenczi invited the delegation, an English professor (Imperial College, London) of Hungarian origin, currently Vice-Dean of the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine (LKCMedicine), and he is also a biophysicist and muscle function researcher.

During the meeting, the delegation learned about a modern education technique called Team Based Learning (TBL), the small-group, practice-oriented medical training, and the border areas of medical and technical training. The leadership of LKCMedicine, James Best Dean, dr. Naomi Low-Beer Assistant Vice-Dean for Education, Lim Kah Leong Vice-Dean for Science and dr. Michael Alan Ferenczi Vice-Dean for General Affairs warmly welcomed and informed the delegation in detail.

In addition to the mutual exchange of experiences, there was also a chance to see a TBL event on pulmonology where the leaders of our School and the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology consulted with TBL's leading content experts and facilitators and asked the students about their experiences. The delegation was also given the opportunity to visit the NTU Centre for Research and Development (CRADLE). CRADLE is responsible for the innovative development and empirical testing of NTU's teaching methodology, and plays a major role in quality control at the university as well. The function and responsibilities of CRADLE were presented by dr. Annabel Chen Shen-Hsing.

In the framework of the health engineer (Biomedical Engineering) training, the delegation visited student labs, a 3D printing centre, and a so-called Maker's Space where students carry out practical development projects designed and submitted by themselves, with minimal guidance and support from teachers.

Members of the delegation were able to meet Professor Péter Török (Imperial College, NTU) who deals with microscope systems, modern light microscope applications and development, and Professor Balázs Gulyás, director of the Centre for Translational Neuroscience, deputy director of the Centre for Neuroimaging Research who introduced the operation and main research direction of the centre, which currently focuses on the study of learning processes with neuroscience methods.

The Medical School is planning to launch a health engineer program under the leadership of dr. Ádám Schiffer from September 2020 in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology, the Faculty of Health Sciences, and the Faculty of Pharmacy. In the framework of the teaching workshop, Professor Zsuzsanna Füzesi, Head of the Division of Medical Education Development and Communication, is planning a demonstration of the Team Based Learning method seen in Singapore and already used at the Institute of Biophysics to improve student motivation and communication. A prerequisite for the Team Based Learning is the proper development of e-learning materials, so this project is linked to the PotePedia curriculum development efforts as well. Not only can the faculties of the university develop a closer cooperation through the health engineer program, but strengthening the relationship between the healthcare industry and the Medical School is also possible.
